Each head weighs approximately 4 to 5 pounds and comes vacuum packed and ready to use.
Sarma or sarmale is a comforting, slow-cooked dish enjoyed across the Balkans and Eastern Europe. To prepare it, gently separate the pickled cabbage leaves and trim the thick center vein if needed. Make a filling using ground pork or a mix of pork and beef, uncooked rice, finely chopped onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Place a small amount of filling onto each leaf, roll tightly, and tuck in the sides. Line the bottom of a pot with chopped cabbage leaves or sauerkraut, arrange the rolls seam-side down, and add smoked meat if desired. Cover with water or broth, bring to a gentle simmer, and cook slowly for two to three hours until tender and rich in flavor. Sarma is often even better the next day and is traditionally served warm with bread, sour cream, or mashed potatoes.
